Resourcing Plastics from the City

Updated on 27.11.2023

The objective of the PlastiCity project is to develop replicable strategies and solutions to increase recycling rates in urban environments from 20-30 % to over 50 %. It does so by unlocking the use of so-called ‘lost plastics’ as secondary resources from the urban environment.

Acronym: PlastiCity
Countries: Belgium, France, Netherlands, United Kingdom
Project website: NA
Start and end date: 01.01.2019 - 30.09.2022
Budget: 5 501 451 EUR
Funding source: Interreg 2 Seas (EU cross-border collaboration programme)

More information

PlastiCity will also:

  • develop technical strategies for (reverse) logistics and reprocessing;
  • induce behavioural change and enhance the capacity of stakeholders through urban platforms;
  • demonstrate strategies and solutions in four case study cities (Douai, Ghent, Southend-on-Sea and The Hague);
  • create new value chains and design new products, by unlocking the full potential of ‘medium’ sized actors (small and medium-sized enterprises, offices, retail, schools, etc.);
  • deploy a mobile unit for testing, demonstration and sensitisation;
  • operate in: the city of Ghent, Belgium; the Douai region of France; the city of Hague, the Netherlands; and the city of Southend-on-Sea, the United Kingdom.

Relevance for Circular Systemic Solutions

The project will develop a strategy to create PlastiCity hubs to significantly increase the recycling rates of lost plastics in urban environments in the 2 Seas Mers Zeeën (2Seas) region. Interreg 2 Seas (2014-2020) is a European funding programme covering coastal regions of four EU Member States along the Southern North Sea and the Channel. PlastiCity hubs are defined as local networks of relevant partners and physical infrastructure, supported by a digital environment or ‘Urban Platform’. The project applies a quadruple helix co-creation process, involving industry, government, research and citizens. Furthermore, to facilitate cross-border collaboration, PlastiCity involves a mobile unit performing testing, demonstration and sensitisation actions in the 2 Seas Mers Zeeën region.
