The Mobility and Environmental department of the Municipality of Lucca is led, at a political level, by a councillor and, at a technical-operational level, by the Manager and six collaborators.

The department manages, within the municipal area:
- the policies related to sustainable mobility of goods and people;
- the elaboration and monitoring of the Mobility Plans of the Municipality of Lucca;
- urban public transport;
- regulations for access to the historic centre;
- strategies for environmental sustainability;
- coordination of the implementation of the ‘2030’ path;
- design, management and reporting of European projects for environmental protection, connection and collaboration with stakeholders, organisations, companies and investee companies for the pursuit of environmental sustainability objectives and their involvement in municipal environmental and mobility initiatives and projects.

Other activities
The Municipality of Lucca signed the Covenant of Mayors in 2012 for the preparation of an ‘Action Plan for sustainable energy’.
A project funded by the Italian Ministry for Ecological Transition is underway for the planting of about 430 trees and the removal of asphalted areas inside school buildings.
With regard to waste, the municipal administration has carried out policies aimed at reducing the production of waste and encouraging separate waste collection, which today is equal to 80 %.

Key publications, policies, legislations and initiatives
In 2019, the Municipality of Lucca adopted a resolution to address the issues of climate change and environmental sustainability. Social and economic development towards sustainability and energy efficiency has already been achieved through various projects. Many of these projects have also been financed by the European Union, the Italian Ministry of the Environment, and Regione Toscana, with the ultimate goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere and establishing good environmental practices, such as energy efficiency and sustainable transport.
